Two members of the Arvada Sunrise Rotary club, Bob Bell and John Thielen, founded Food For Thought - Denver. Through a similar program sponsored by the Arvada Sunrise Rotary club in Arvada, Bob and John became aware of the tremendous need in the Denver Public Schools for an effort such as Food For Thought. A partnership with Metropolitan State University of Denver was formed when MSU Denver donated on campus space and provided access to their student body volunteers. With support and initial funding from the Arvada Sunrise Rotary Club Foundation, the first Powersacks were delivered to two Denver Elementary schools in March 2012. Since that time, Food for Thought has delivered over 250 tons of food!

Center for Advance Care Planning
Dec. 11, 2018 7:00 a.m.
As a clinical dietitian Fran spent many, many years working in hospitals and nursing homes. She managed tube feedings for adult residents who had never had a voice. These individuals taught her many valuable lessons about quality of life, family dynamics, the role of religion, state laws, and so much more. Working in hospice came next and opened Fran’s eyes to realism, to futile treatments, to the beauty of good quality of life and being at peace with what’s to come. Fran continued her journey in Advance Care Planning when she became the Manager of Faith Initiatives for The Conversation Project in Boulder. In this position she encountered people who had persistent fears about end-of-life. Through Fran’s presentations the audience gains knowledge about advance care planning. This helps them feel more secure in facing end-of-life issues. |

A carbon tax bill has been introduced in Congress - what does it mean?
Jan. 08, 2019 7:00 a.m.
A bipartisan bill to counter the warming of the planet was introduced in the House and Senate in late 2018. The bill proposes that the extraction of coal, oil, and natural gas be taxed — basic economics says that if we want to use less of something, make it more expensive. The bill then stipulates that the collected funds be distributed to every household in the country, thereby compensating for fuel costs and stimulating new investment. We will briefly discuss the history of this bill: Why members of both political parties can support it, and What the effect will be if passed into law. Lost in the recent tumult of other Washington news, this bill will be re-introduced in the coming legislative session; it will not go away. Biography Phil Nelson chairs the Golden Chapter of Citizens’ Climate Lobby, a volunteer nonpartisan, nonprofit group that promotes legislation to counter climate change. Phil is a geophysicist with degrees from MIT, with a career in mineral exploration, oil and gas production, and nuclear waste disposal. Since retiring, he devotes his time to Citizens’ Climate Lobby and to lecturing on aspects of climate change, extreme weather, and the human response to global warming. |

Since 2001, the Arvada Wheat Ridge Service Ambassadors for Youth (AWRSAY) has recognized youth who have overcome a major life obstacle or adversity. AWRSAY seeks to acknowledge these deserving youth by providing recognition to all and, in the case of high school seniors, scholarship opportunities to Red Rocks Community College. We hope that through community encouragement, support and recognition, Arvada and Wheat Ridge youth will grow to be confident members and leaders in our communities. AWRSAY is entirely volunteer-driven. We encourage you to become involved by nominating a deserving youth or supporting AWRSAY through funding, mentoring, or youth employment. |
