A carbon tax bill has been introduced in Congress - what does it mean?
Jan. 08, 2019 7:00 a.m.
A bipartisan bill to counter the warming of the planet was introduced in the House and Senate in late 2018. The bill proposes that the extraction of coal, oil, and natural gas be taxed — basic economics says that if we want to use less of something, make it more expensive. The bill then stipulates that the collected funds be distributed to every household in the country, thereby compensating for fuel costs and stimulating new investment. We will briefly discuss the history of this bill: Why members of both political parties can support it, and What the effect will be if passed into law. Lost in the recent tumult of other Washington news, this bill will be re-introduced in the coming legislative session; it will not go away. Biography Phil Nelson chairs the Golden Chapter of Citizens’ Climate Lobby, a volunteer nonpartisan, nonprofit group that promotes legislation to counter climate change. Phil is a geophysicist with degrees from MIT, with a career in mineral exploration, oil and gas production, and nuclear waste disposal. Since retiring, he devotes his time to Citizens’ Climate Lobby and to lecturing on aspects of climate change, extreme weather, and the human response to global warming. |

Through a similar program sponsored by the Arvada Sunrise Rotary club in Arvada, Bob and John became aware of the tremendous need in the Denver Public Schools for an effort such as Food For Thought. A partnership with Metropolitan State University of Denver was formed when MSU Denver donated on campus space and provided access to their student body volunteers. With support and initial funding from the Arvada Sunrise Rotary Club Foundation, the first Powersacks were delivered to two Denver Elementary schools in March 2012. Since that time, Food for Thought has delivered over 250 tons of food!

Two members of the Arvada Sunrise Rotary club, Bob Bell and John Thielen, founded Food For Thought - Denver.

Since then, more than 5.5 million ounces of milk has been collected from more than 12,500 donors and dispensed to more than 120 hospitals in 35 states. Where – While MMB is physically located in Denver, Colorado, it has had donors from all 50 states in its history. This is made possible by the many Donation & Outreach Centers that serve as drop-off locations for donors located all over the country. |

The program is called Space Horizons, a coalition of professionals from business, academia, science and entertainment dedicated to promoting interest in higher education, particularly STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Math) fields for at-risk students in underserved communities. Space Horizons created an after-school program that kicks off with day of celebrity inspirations in a university auditorium setting. University of Denver hosted the last session. The program then involves the kids meeting after school with science teachers and aerospace engineer-volunteers to design a satellite launch (weather balloon) with a student designed payload of experiments. The launch, tracking and recovery is the highlight of the program. This truly inspires high school students to enter engineering fields. |
