The SCOPE books project, managed by founder Dr. Pat Colfer has been collecting used books from multiple sources, then meticulously sorting, repairing, and packing the books and shipping them by containers since 2009 to Kenyan primary schools. Dr. Pat Colfer has now recently handed over the running of SCOPE books to a new board with a view to increase books donations and expansion of capacity to deliver services more effectively. SCOPE has established libraries at over 300 primary schools and developed leadership teams at over 50. Close to one million (977,458) books have been shipped to Kenya. Colorado volunteers help in collecting, sorting, repairing and shipping books. Spanish language and other children’s books not suitable for Africa have been donated to local organizations. |

Join us at Food for Thought (FFT) MSU and help us pack PowerSacks for children in need. Volunteers help little ones bridge the hunger gap between the meals they receive at school and the weekend, when these meals are not available. Activities at FFT MSU take place outside, so please make sure you are dressed comfortably for both movement/lifting and the weather--layers are a good idea! Parking is available for free along the street and there is also a paid lot right across from the site. Volunteers must sign up to participate. Registration is easy: simply choose a date (or multiple dates) and job. Food for Thought is 100% volunteer-run, so we are incredibly grateful for our volunteers--thank you!! 1600 W. Inspire Environmental Learning
Oct. 26, 2021 7:10 a.m.
The Nature Center is the City of Arvada’s environmental education facility. We offer many school and group programs to engage kids with nature. Using the nature trails, wetland areas and prairie ecosystems to explore, we connect thousands of kids with Arvada’s parks to better understand nature. We also provide programs for everyone with our public programming, from toddlers to adults, to connect all ages in our community with the wonder of nature. From nature art, to drop-in discoveries, to conservation presentations, you can find most nature topics available for a variety of ages. Our facility also has 3,000 square feet of hands-on displays, wildlife exhibits, a kids’ activity area, classrooms and meeting spaces. From our augmented reality sandbox to our mounted gray wolf, all ages can learn to explore nature. And just outside the Nature Center is 25,000 square feet of a beautiful water-conserving demonstration garden where visitors can discover native and regionally appropriate plants and wildlife. We work with City park maintenance and Master Gardeners to provide information on invasive plants and updated plant recommendation lists, habitat-friendly choices, and best practices to ensure a sustainable and beautiful garden. Connected is the Majestic View Community Park, with over 80 acres to explore. |

SAIDO Learning
Nov. 09, 2021 7:10 a.m.
Improving the quality of life for seniors with Alzheimer's and dementia. As many of us know from personal experience, Alzheimer's, dementia, and other diseases affecting memory and cognition in older adults have severe impacts - not only do these diseases affect the lives of those diagnosed, they also affect the lives of friends, loved ones, and caregivers trying to provide assistance. SAIDO Learning can help lessen this impact by improving the quality of life for those affected by Alzheimer's and dementia. SAIDO is a nonpharmacological program based on a learning intervention offering mental exercises and an opportunity for enhancing individual engagement with staff and others in everyday life. SAIDO Learning was developed by the Kumon Institute of Education (Kumon) of Osaka, Japan, in conjunction with Professor Ryuta Kawashima of the Smart Aging International Research Center (SAIRC) at Tohoku University in Sendai. It has been practiced for more than 18 years in more than 1,600 nursing facilities across Japan, showing increased engagement in over 18,000 older adults. The goal of SAIDO Learning is to not only provide care for individuals with dementia, but to improve their quality of life through intentional engagement opportunities. Alzheimer’s disease and dementia constitute the 6th leading cause of death in the United States today, with an estimated 5.8 million older adults diagnosed. Through SAIDO Learning, we can do more than just care for older adults with Alzheimer’s and dementia – we can positively impact their quality of life without the use of drugs. In the video below, you’ll get a glimpse of sessions and the exercises that learners and supporters take part in. The individualization throughout the sessions allows SAIDO to reach learners at any stage of dementia and enables them to gain confidence. SAIDO does not just treat the symptoms of dementia, SAIDO changes the person. |

GRANGE movement - Past and Present
Dec. 14, 2021 7:10 a.m.
Granger movement, coalition of U.S. farmers, particularly in the Middle West, that fought monopolistic grain transport practices during the decade following the American Civil War. What drew most farmers to the Granger movement was the need for unified action against the monopolistic railroads and grain elevators (often owned by the railroads) that charged exorbitant rates for handling and transporting farmers’ crops and other agricultural products. The National Grange, as it is called, remains a fraternal organization of farmers and takes an active stance on national legislation affecting the agricultural sector. |
