a small company dedicated to creating access to composting where it didn't previously exist.
Jul. 26, 2022 7:10 a.m.
Christi Turner is founder of Scraps, a small company dedicated to creating access to composting where it didn't previously exist. She has worked in sustainability, sustainable community development, environmental communications & environmental journalism throughout her career. Christi spent seven years in Madagascar helping communities create appropriate solutions to the sustainability challenges they faced. She came to Colorado to take a step back from development and instead pursue a masters in environmental journalism, and spent the next several years here photographing, filming, writing about and otherwise sharing the environmental, sustainability & climate issues facing the state and region. As an entrepreneur and CEO of Scraps - a small, local, environmentally & socially responsible company - Christi leans on both of these facets of her background. |

AWRSAY CARES...Since 2001, the Arvada Wheat Ridge Service Ambassadors for Youth (AWRSAY) has recognized youth who have overcome a major life obstacle or adversity. AWRSAY seeks to acknowledge these deserving youth by providing recognition to all and, in the case of high school seniors, scholarship opportunities to Red Rocks Community College. We hope that through community encouragement, support and recognition, Arvada and Wheat Ridge youth will grow to be confident members and leaders in our communities. AWRSAY is entirely volunteer-driven. We encourage you to become involved by nominating a deserving youth or supporting AWRSAY through funding, mentoring, or youth employment. |

Peace Corp Experience and it's relationship with Rotary
Oct. 11, 2022 7:10 a.m.
I am very active with Returned Peace Corps Volunteers of Colorado, an organization that focuses on supporting newly returned volunteers, and also co-chair of District 5450’s Rotary – Peace Corps Alliance Committee, which inspires clubs to work with Peace Corps volunteers. Through those connections, I have had many conversations with returned volunteers about how Rotary can fit in with their professional development, international service, and local community service. |

Information from Center for Disease Control and Prevention Website World Polio Day (October 24) provides an opportunity to highlight global efforts toward a polio-free world and honor the tireless contributions of those on the frontlines in the fight to eradicate polio from every corner of the globe. Polio was once one of the most feared diseases in the U.S. In the early 1950s, before polio vaccines were available, polio outbreaks caused more than 15,000 cases of paralysis each year. Following introduction of vaccines—specifically, trivalent inactivated poliovirus vaccine (IPV) in 1955 and trivalent oral poliovirus vaccine (OPV) in 1963—the number of polio cases fell rapidly to less than 100 in the 1960s and fewer than 10 in the 1970s. Thanks to the polio vaccine, dedicated health care professionals, and parents who vaccinate their children on schedule, wild poliovirus has been eliminated in this country for more than 30 years.
Rotary International Polio Plus Milestones 1979 - Rotary International begins its fight against polio with a multi-year project to immunize 6 million children in the Philippines. 1985 - Rotary International launches PolioPlus, the first and largest internationally coordinated private-sector support of a public health initiative, with an initial fundraising target of US$120 million. 1988 - There are an estimated 350,000 cases of polio in 125 countries. [Since 1988 there has been a 99.9% reduction in polio cases; only two countries remain endemic: Afghanistan and Pakistan.] 1994 - The International Commission for the Certification of Poliomyelitis Eradication announces that polio has been eliminated from the Americas. 2009 - Rotary's overall contribution to the eradication effort nears $800 million. In January, the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation pledges $355 million and issues Rotary a challenge grant of $200 million. This announcement will result in a combined $555 million in support of the Global Polio Eradication Initiative. |

Family Promise
Nov. 22, 2022 7:10 a.m.
TACKLING THE PROBLEM OF POVERTYPoverty is a complex problem. It won’t yield to a simple solution. It requires an integrated approach that reaches beyond immediate needs. We initiate coordinated local efforts that bring communities together to help families experiencing homelessness regain their housing, their independence, and their dignity. Every year in America, over 3 million children experience homelessness. These children are 8-9 times more likely to repeat a grade, 3 times more likely to be placed in special education programs, and 7 times more likely to attempt suicide. 42% will drop out of school at some point and 47% suffer from anxiety, depression, or withdrawal. |

POSTPONED DUE TO WEATHER Come tour the New Arvada Fire Station 9 - 9276 Wilkerson Ct
Nov. 29, 2022 10:00 a.m.
Arvada Fire’s ninth fire station, proudly serving the growing Candelas community, will be operational in the fall of 2022. The 12,128-square-foot station is located at 9276 Wilkerson Court near Highway 72 and Candelas Parkway. Although Arvada Fire has relocated and replaced fire stations during the past 43 years, this will be our first new station addition since 1979. Centrally located in Candelas, the station will provide excellent access and response times to the entire development. When it opens, the fire station will be staffed with an advanced life support fire engine and cross-staffed with a brush truck specifically equipped to respond to wildfires in the wildland urban interface. Additionally, the station was built with the capacity to serve this community for many years into the future. There is sufficient space in the apparatus bays to accommodate future needs for additional fire apparatus and an ambulance as the demand for services increases. The exterior of the station was designed to align with the City of Arvada’s standard design for the Candelas area, while the internal features of the building were designed to serve the many needs of a modern fire department. Those needs included training features designed into the apparatus bay, a 1,127-square-foot gym to promote fitness, eight individual bunk rooms, and numerous features to support cancer prevention, such as a decontamination corridor. Aligned with our desire to preserve the environment, the new station is also equipped with a rooftop solar system to reduce our carbon footprint and its landscape includes natural and wild grass instead of a manicured lawn to reduce water consumption. Most importantly, the location of the new fire station is based on data used to determine how we can best fulfill our vision to provide exceptional public safety services to our community. Our data modeling determined that response times to 911 calls from the new fire station will significantly improve to not only Candelas, but also to the neighborhoods of Whisper Creek and Five Parks. |
